Chapter Fourteen

Lina

What Nord found, as it turns out, was nothing. Nada. Zilch.

Not one single, solitary blip.

In fact, after multiple attempts over the course of multiple days, and even asking Finley to double-check, it would seem that Lina was totally and completely normal—at least by primordial essence standards, not that she knew what that meant.

She could not be more frustrated with her diagnosis.

If there was nothing “wrong” with her . . . then what the hell was wrong with her? How could she go from being able to create music out of thin air and send butterflies made out of smoke traipsing through the sky to . . . nothing?

At least if there was evidence of magical tampering, then she’d have an explanation as well as a path for them to follow. Without one, they were left guessing with little in the way of potential solutions.

It wasn’t helping her mood any that her research attempts were also dead ends. After daily visits to the archive, Lina had managed to make her way through the archivist’s selection up to the “Ce” section but had yet to have anyone jump out at her.

After voicing her frustrations that morning, Nord had promised he’d take her around to some of the supernatural tattoo shops that afternoon to see if anyone recognized her or her ink. The only caveat? She had to sit through another one of his damned meditation sessions.

A blunt finger tapped her hard in the middle of her forehead, interrupting her wandering thoughts. “You aren’t concentrating.”

Lina peeled one eye open. “Yes, I am.”

“No,” Nord insisted, “you’re not. I can tell.”

She opened her other eye, demanding, “How?”

“Well, for one, you stopped timing your breaths. For another, you’re scowling at me.”

“My eyes were closed. How could I have been scowling at you?”

He waved a hand. “Maybe you were just scowling in my general direction. It doesn’t matter. The point stands. Your mind was wandering, and to unpleasant places from the looks of it. If you were really focusing, you’d be at peace.”

Lina huffed out a breath. “Nord, this is stupid. Meditation isn’t going to accomplish anything.”

“How do you know when you refuse to try it?”

“I’ve tried it,” she sputtered. “Twice a day, every day, for the last week I’ve sat here next to you focusing on my chi or whatever the hell you called it.”

Nord was fighting hard not to laugh, and it only infuriated her more.

“I mean it, this is a waste of time.”

He was sitting in front of her, his knees almost touching hers in their mirrored pretzel position. After studying her for a moment, he gave her arm a quick, comforting squeeze.

“I know it may feel like a waste, trust me, but there’s a lot to be said for knowing how to achieve a calm mind.”

“So you keep telling me,” she groaned.

Lina pressed the heels of her hands into her eyes. She was sure he was probably right, but she didn’t like being alone with her thoughts. It made her itchy. Instead
